The Art of Natural Dyes

  • The Apothecary Gardens Kingweston Road Glastonbury, England, BA6 8TF United Kingdom (map)

Join textiles artist Jordan Maxwell and The Apothecary Garden for an inspiring workshop exploring the art of natural dyes.

In this three-hour workshop, you’ll learn about the history of natural dyes and how to create seasonal dyes using wild plants, food waste and traditional pigments.

Jordan will share detailed knowledge about all the basics, such as equipment, fabrics, mordants, various dye methods and modifiers. Giving you all the wisdom you need to continue your natural dyeing practice with confidence.

Inspired by the rhythms of nature you’ll discover common seasonal dye plants that can be easily found in the South West; both in your garden and in the hedgerows. Jordan will also be sharing about her approach to mindful creative practice and working in harmony with the earth.

You’ll be hand-dyeing your own soft organic cotton scarf, using shibori and tie-dye techniques to create beautiful patterns in the fabric. Going home with a beautiful piece to adorn yourself with through the winter months.

A quick recap of what you’ll receive:

  • Knowledge of suitable fibres and equipment for dye projects

  • How to use mordants, both mineral and plant-based

  • A guide of common, seasonal dyestuffs

  • Natural dye methods to explore: dye baths, bundle dyeing and solar dyes.

  • Your own naturally dyed organic cotton scarf

  • Aftercare for dyed pieces

This workshop is suitable for beginners and seasoned dyers wanting to refresh their craft.

There will be herbal teas to sip throughout the workshop and an opportunity to enjoy the autumnal beauty of The Apothecary Gardens.
